The Pulse of Tamil Folk Rhythm
Jikkattam is a lively and high energy dance form with deep roots in Tamil Nadu’s folk traditions, especially in the Coimbatore and Pollachi regions. The name comes from the ‘tholkaruvi’ drum, which makes a sharp ‘jik jik’ sound, setting the beat for the dance.
Originally, Jikkattam wasn’t just a performance it had a practical purpose. Villagers used it as a way to scare off wild animals and later as a method of making public announcements. Over time, it evolved into the vibrant dance form it is today.
A Jikkattam performance is always a rhythmic spectacle, driven by live music. Traditional instruments like the thudumbu, kanjiru, nagari, urutu kunda, jalra and tappu add to the energy. Dancers move in sync with whistle cues, creating an electrifying performance. Nowadays, many performances also use recorded drum tracks.
The beauty of Jikkattam lies in its versatility. It blends different folk styles like themangu, oyilattam, kavadiattam, and tapattam, while also embracing modern influences.
